Colleagues,

As you probably know already, the RCSD Board of Education is scheduled to vote next Tuesday on the Superintendent’s proposed budget for the next school year. If approved as recommended, it would include severe cuts of Home/Hospital teacher positions as well as reductions in Social Worker and School Counselor positions.

We oppose these proposed cuts and hope that Dr. Rosser will reconsider his recommendation. In a budget that exceeds $1.1 billion, it is unnecessary and indefensible to cut such critical services for our most vulnerable students. But if he does not, please join us at a 5pm rally next Tuesday, May 12th, in front of Central Office (131 W. Broad Street) to urge the school board to reject these hurtful proposed cuts. Immediately after that, we will move indoors to the Board meeting to show our solidarity with the students who would be so adversely affected by the proposed cuts.

In the interim, please email members of the school board and urge them to restore these needed services – although some Board of Education commissioners have already expressed concerns about the proposed cuts. For your convenience, all the RCSD Board members’ email addresses are below. And, if you can, please join us on Monday, May 11, at the RTA (30 N. Union Street, Suite 301) at any time between 3pm and 5pm for a drop in poster painting session. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.

Union solidarity means that we must stand up for each other. And, as educators, we have an obligation to always advocate for what our students need.
