Nominations Open for NYSUT/AFT/NEA Delegates
This is your official notice that nominations are now open to all members of the Rochester Teachers Association for the candidacy of Delegates to the NEW YORK STATE UNITED TEACHERS (NYSUT) REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY, the AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS (AFT) CONVENTION, and the NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (NEA) CONVENTION.
ELIGIBILITY
1. Any member in good standing with RTA is eligible to nominate a Delegate.
2. Any member of the RTA, who at the time of nomination is a member in good standing, is eligible to be nominated as a candidate for Delegate.
PROCEDURE
1. A nomination should include:
a. the name of the nominee.
b. the signature of the member making the nomination.
2. Written nominations must be received in the RTA office by 4:00 PM, October 24, 2025.
3. Nominations may be made from the floor of the November 18, 2025 Representative Assembly meeting.
4. Nominees or observers maybe present for the drawing of ballot positions on 12/8/2025, at 11:30 a.m. in the RTA office.
NUMBER OF DELEGATES ELECTED — TERMS OF OFFICE
Based on current membership, RTA would be entitled to 28 Delegates to NYSUT and 29 to AFT and 2 to NEA. This number may change based on most recent dues receipts. The term of office for a delegate is two years. The RTA membership will elect “X” number of delegates and the actual number of delegate slots will be filled in rank order based on the number of votes received – the first delegate being the one who received the highest number of votes. Remaining candidates will serve as alternates.
DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITY
Candidates should be aware of the following dates when the conventions will be held:
NYSUT Representative Assembly – May 1 – May 2, 2026 – Albany, NY
AFT Convention – July 16 – 19, 2026 – Washington, DC
NEA Convention – July 3 – 7, 2026 – Denver, CO
Several Rochester area meetings are held during the year. All Delegates will be expected to attend these sessions and meetings.
DELEGATE ELECTION CALENDAR
October 24, 2025 – Deadline for written nominations to be received in the RTA office no later than 4 pm.
November 18, 2025- N & E Committee will receive additional nominations from the floor of the Representative Assembly. (Rep should have the consent of the nominee).
January 7, 2026 – Ballots emailed to all members.
January 28, 2026 – Deadline for ballot submission.
February 24, 2026 – Nominating & Elections Committee reports election results to the RA.
